Well looks like my beloved Oilers have officially finished their season. With all things considered, I think they had a great year and suprised a lot of people. First of all they ended last season losing 20 straight games before finally beating Calgary in their season finale. This all coming after the suprise trade of the team's biggest player, Ryan Smyth, which I believe is the reason for their poor finish last year. During the off-season they got rid of another key player in their captain, Jason Smith, now when I heard this news I thought Edmonton was going to have a terrible season which would see them at the bottom of the league. With the young crop of players the team had in the line-up, it looked like this was going to be a building year.
Now the start of the season wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't looking as bad as all the so called "experts" where saying it was going to be. Then all the injuries seemed to mount up all at the wrong time which included many of their expierenced players such as Ethan Moreau, Shawn Horcoff, Sheldon Souray, and Raffi Torres. Now with all of these injuries the fate of the team was put on their young stars shoulders and players like Andrew Cogliano, Sam Ganger, and Curtis Glencross had to make an impact. These players and the rest of the crew stepped up and stepped up big, especially in shoot outs where they were an amazing 15-4 which is an NHL record for most shoot out wins. The teams amazing play in shoot outs kept them fighting for a playoff spot right till the end.
Then on their second last game of the season against the Calgary Flames, the Oilers finally were eliminated from playoff contention with a 3-2 loss. Now you think this would have angered me and made me want to throw my TV out the window, but I actually am really looking forward to next season and really want to see how the young players have developed. To make the blow a little easier though it was nice to see last night that the Oilers played the spoiler role perfectly, and beat the "under-achieving" Canucks 2-1 and eliminated them from playoff contention as well.
So next season I think the Oilers will be fighting for a playoff spot and you can quote me on this, I think they WILL make the playoffs next year. I'm not sure maybe no one out there agrees with me and I'm just being an idiot, let me know.

I don't really know who the Oilers have coming up through the ranks in goal, but if they truly want to build a winning team they need to find some young talent in goal. Mathieu Garon played very well for them this year, and was definitely a pleasant surprise. But who knows what he will be like next year? Plus he's 30 years old...so yeah I think their future is bright but it would be a lot brighter with a young goaltender to grow with Gagne and Cogliano.
Oh, the Oilers are going to make it to the playoffs.
it's really not a great season unless you make the playoffs or if you find a slew of hot young talent.
i'm pretty sure the oilers have done neither same with the canucks and the leafs.
o well the raptors are in!
